Hi everyone,

Biology Club will be meeting this Monday, April 1. We will have guest speaker Natasha Dillon from the Physiology Graduate Program. Their Masters of science and PhD program offer a research-based degree. The Master of Physiology program is a non-thesis degree and serves to prepare students to improve their academic credentials before applying to professional school, while also advancing their knowledge in the subject of Physiology. If you are interested in pursuing a future degree beyond your undergraduate years, definitely come to hear about the program. As usual, we will meet in David Clark Labs 102 at 5:30 pm.

Also, on Saturday, April 6, the Biology Club will volunteer at the 11th Annual Neuse River Cleanup (www.neuseriver.org/events/neuserivercleanup.html#2013).  We will be working on foot to cleanup the shoreline of Crabtree Creek in North Raleigh.  We will meet at NCSU at 9:30 am and volunteer until about 2 pm.  If you would like to participate or have any questions about the cleanup, please email Gabrielle at gmschroe@ncsu.edu by Wednesday, April 3. She will speak more about the project at the meeting.

I hope you all have a great break, and see you on Monday!

Hey everyone,

Just a reminder, we have a meeting tomorrow, Monday, March 18, at 5:30 pm in 102 David Clark Labs.  Dr. Chris Ashwell, the director of the Office of Undergraduate Research, will be speaking to the club about some of the undergraduate research opportunities and resources available at NCSU, as well as more general advice on becoming involved in undergraduate research.

Also, as I am sure you know, Service Raleigh is coming up this Saturday, March 23. We do not have many members signed up for our group as of now. We are assigned to work with the NC Muesem of Natural Sciences. If anyone is still interested in coming, definitely please sign up for it here at this link:
Because they only let up to a certain number of volunteers register, you may or may not be able to still register. Absolutely do try to do so though if you would still like to volunteer. Our group name is Biology Club and the password is bio123

We will talk about it at the meeting tomorrow, but if you have any questions for now, you can email me at apatel5@ncsu.edu. Thanks and I hope to see you the meeting tomorrow!

Service Opportunity

Hello club members,
First, a service opportunity that can fulfill the Biology Club service requirement (one service event per semester):.Baileywick Elementary School is looking for students who would be interested in volunteering a couple hours of their time to talk to Kindergarteners through 5th graders about their science projects at their Science Expo.  The Baileywick Science Expo is not set up as a competition.  The evaluators give the young scientists an opportunity to talk about what they learned.  The Science Expo is on Thursday March 14th from 5:45 to 8:00 pm, and Baileywick Elementary is located at 9425 Baileywick Road, Raleigh, NC 27615  (near Creedmore Rd. and Hwy 540).  If you are interested, please see the attached flyer after this post for more information and contact Mary Roach, the Baileywick Science Expo Evaluator Coordinator, at mebroach12@gmail.com
Additionally, some of you may be interested in attending a seminar tomorrow.  The Department of Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences (MEAS) at the North Carolina State University will be hosting a seminar on March 11th from 3:30 pm – 5:00 pm at 1216 Jordan Addition.  Ken Lacovara, Ph.D, Associate Professor for the Department of Biology at Drexel University, will be speaking about "Giants at the End of the World: Recent Dinosaur Discoveries from Southernmost Patagonia, Argentina."  Please see the abstract at the end of this post for more information.

Hello club members,

Our next meeting is on Monday, February 25.  Dr. Joshua Hall will be visiting the club to tell us about the Biological and Biomedical Sciences Program (BBSP) at UNC-Chapel Hill.  BBSP is a graduate program that unites 14 PhD programs, including biology, neurobiology, pharmacology, genetics and molecular biology, and bioinformatics and computational biology.  Its format enourages interdisciplinary approaches and allows students to investigate multiple research areas or, alternatively, quickly focus on one field.  Dr. Hall will also share advice on preparing for and choosing a graduate program.  If you are interested in pursuing a graduate degree in the biological sciences, but aren't sure how to become a strong applicant or find a good program, this presentation will help point you in the right direction.  As usual, we will meet at 5:30 pm in 102 David Clark Labs.

See you on Monday!

The Science of Love, with Dr Lisa A. McGraw

Hello club members,

The Biology Club's next meeting is on Monday, February 11, at 5:30 pm in 102 David Clark Labs.  Dr. Lisa A. McGraw, a member of the NCSU Biology and Genetics departments, is giving a Valentine's Day themed presentation on the science of love.  In order to study social and reproductive behaviors in the lab, Dr. McGraw uses a unique rodent, the socially monogamous prairie vole.  Unlike their "promiscuous" cousin, the meadow vole, a prairie vole forms a long-lasting bond to its mate, and both the male and female help take care of their offspring.  Dr. McGraw draws on theories and techniques from evolutionary biology, neuroscience, and genetics to explore the differences between these species and, in the process, answer questions about the basis of social behaviors and the consequences of sexual conflict.

Also happening next week:

The next day, Tuesday, February 12, the Biology Department is celebrating Darwin's birthday.  Make sure to stop by the lobby of David Clark Labs from 3-4 pm for some free tea, cake, evolution cookies, and other Darwin-themed celebrations!

The final application deadline for Teach for America is Friday, February 15.   Teach For America is the national corps of outstanding recent college graduates, graduate students, and professionals from all different majors and backgrounds who commit to teach for two years in urban and rural public schools and become lifelong leaders in expanding educational opportunity.  All academic majors and backgrounds accepted (background in education/teacher certification is not required), and teachers receive full salary and benefits, as well as deferment of federal student loans.  Graduate school and corporate partnerships are available.  For more information, visit www.teachforamerica.org or contact Teach For America’s representative atFlorence.matthews@teachforamerica.org.

Saturday, February 16, is Darwin Day at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences (http://naturalsciences.org/programs-events/darwin-day-2013), and Dr. Holly Menninger, who visited the club earlier this semester to talk about Your Wild Life, is looking for a few volunteers to talk to visitors in the Biodiversity Lab.  The lab will be open from 10-4 pm, and she needs volunteers for 3 hour shifts (10-1 pm and 1-4 pm).  Lunch is provided.  If you're interested, please contact Dr. Holly at holly.menninger@gmail.com ASAP.

Hope to see you on Monday!

Sunday, January 27, 2013

Hey everyone!

Hope your semester is off to a good start. We will have our second Biology Club meeting of the semester this
Monday, January 28th. As always, our meeting will be at 5:30 pm in 102 David Clark Labs. We will have
Dr. Herminia Ferreras, a Pediatric Neurologist, speak to us. Come learn about neurological disorders and
seizures as they pertain to children. This will be a great opportunity to learn about a unique profession.

Also, please remember to bring club dues with you to the meeting if you plan to become an official
member ($12/year or $8/semester). They help us cover travel and food costs.

See you on Monday!
